MES Advisory Board member Mary Wyderski shares how MES has triggered her company to become more efficient.

How to increase your company’s efficiency without sacrificing its productivity? It’s a challenge most of us face at one point in our careers … including Mary Wyderski.

She’s the vice president of information systems/information technology for building and construction at Intertek PSI, a professional services firm.

The London-based Intertek acquired the U.S.-based PSI, about 18 months ago. PSI had been owned by a private equity firm and, so finding operational efficiencies was a priority. “When I started at PSI, the accounting staff was over 60 people. With efficiencies in technology, we were able to get that under 20,” says Wyderski.

Attending the Midsize Enterprise Summit, which offers IT decision-makers exclusive access to more than 80 top vendors, seasoned Gartner analysts and an elite group of peers has helped Wyderski (who is an MES Advisory Board member) navigate these changes.

Wyderski was promoted to lead the whole technology effort at PSI, four years ago, after the company consolidated from having separate individuals in charge of both systems and infrastructure.

“At the time, I didn’t have a lot of experience with infrastructure. My model was to move to managed services and leave the expertise to our business partners. I felt, ‘Wow, I need to figure out what everyone else is doing.’” That’s how Wyderski got involved with MES. She was looking for a midmarket organization where she could learn from peers and be on the forefront of where the industry is headed.

It turns out, figuring out how to maximize efficiency was not a problem unique to Wyderski or MES attendees in general. Nor is it the only problem MES attendees face. That makes sense, seeing expectations have changed so rapidly in the past decade,

“The hot button for us, right now, is how to balance the desire to innovate with our budget,” says Wyderski.

“The transformation of people expecting to get what they want very quickly and making sure you position yourself to meet those expectations quickly is what’s keeping me up at night.”

Indeed, that efficiency-productivity balance remains a challenge for many.

She’s very happy with what MES has done for her.

“It’s worked out really well. It was great to see how welcoming the MES group was from the moment I got there. Relationships started building from the first one I attended. I feel fortunate to be welcomed and included, even socially. Then, being asked to join the board, it’s been fantastic.”
